Too many metal musicians are hung up on being technically proficient. They focus too much on how good they play their instrument, and, a lot of the time, forget to make good music. It’s not how well you play, it’s how good the end product is. Metal is more related to Punk than most idiots would like to admit. There is more in raw energy and skill than there is in technical ability.

Motorhead will always be better than Dream Theater.
No band filled with talented showboats will ever make an album as good as Welcome to Hell.
Old School Death Metal will always be superior to Brutal Death Metal and (overly-)Technical (wank) Death Metal, no matter how good the guys in Necrofagist, or all the Necrofagist-wannabes that make up Tech Death, are at playing their instruments.

I want to see bands that pride themselves on being able to play their instruments well. not bands that look scary.

1. It was a play on a shitty band’s name. Quit whining. The only thing you should be criticizing me for is how easy and uncreative it was, and that I should do better next time.
2. That’s exactly my point. They sucked at playing their instruments, yet their first three albums are, bar none, three of the best Metal albums to ever be created, as recognized by anyone with a brain in their head and a good taste in music. You will never see some overly-technical hack making anything nearly as good as them, ever.

And I want bands to focus on making good music, not how much they can show off. I don’t like soulless drivel, especially soulless drivel that gets a pass because it has some technical qualities.
